At Flock and Herd, we focus our care and attention on the pasture, and the pasture cares for the animals.
We raise a variety of livestock at Brook’s Bend. At the core is the flock of Icelandic Sheep and a small herd of Jersey/Milking Devon cattle. There’s also a flock of hens. Depending on the year, season, interest and management goals, we have also raised chickens and pigs.
We base our care for our livestock on the grass, forbs, and browse in the fields and the edges. We focus our care and attention on the pasture and, for the most part, the pastures provide the care for the animals. From the animals we receive meat, manure, eggs, wool, milk, entertainment and relationships that tie us and anchor us to the land. They remind us of our obligation. They are the result of literally hundreds of generations of families’ and communities’ dependence, care and foresight. They get us outside first thing in the morning and sometimes keep us outside late into the night.
We often have lamb shares that we distribute in the fall. Please reach out if interested.
